Apart from the initial shock, my immediate thoughts were that maybe it was not as serious as it sounded. Seven of the United team had died almost immediately -- Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Coleman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Bill Whelan. I'll never forget the flickering newsreel the next day of Charlton, clearly in a state of shock, being interviewed from his hospital bed in Munich. What was left of the United team had to pick up the pieces and carry on under assistant manager Jimmy Murphy who did an extraordinary job in the circumstances. Many previously uncommitted football fans became United supporters at that time, not just in England but around the world.
